After a day or two, Warren and Lao-puo and I took another bus farther north, into Fujian Province and a lovely seaport city named Xiamen. Until fairly recently, Xiamen was one of those economic free zones that Social Credit tried to trot out in British Columbia years ago. In the last century, Xiamen was a treaty portone of several forced on the Chinese government by the surrender that ended the Opium War. The mind boggles. Can you imagine fighting a war so "respectable" Engish merchants could get rich selling dope in China? God, Queen, and Country? Yeah right. I dont [View Full Entry]

Versailles

 Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris
If you ever get a chance to go to Paris, you must take a day to travel out to Versailles. It is a beautiful little city outside of Paris that becomes a perfect pit stop in the middle of any busy Paris trip. We decided to see Versailles by taking another Fat Tire Bike tour. Despite the Bastille Day hangover, it was an amazing trip and my mother and I were so happy that we decided to do it. It was probably one of the highlights of our trip. After tackling the train with our bikes, we arrived in Versailles [View Full Entry]

Bastille Day!

 Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris
Holy crap Bastille Day is fun. If you think 4th of July is impressive, think again. There are so many people out and about it is increddible. But to back up a little, we started our morning off at a tiny Crepe shoppe around the corner. Cuttest little cafe ever and best crepes I have ever eaten. Definitely a must do when in Paris. We then made our way over to the Rodin museum. We didn't go inside we just stuck to the gardens, and for 2 Euros, it was totally worth it. The first item you see when you [View Full Entry]

Busy, Busy, Busy

 Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris
So sorry for such a delay in the writing situation but I am facing a low batery and a long story about the crappy guy at Best Buy selling me the wrong adapter. Enough about that and on to the goods. Friday: We spent our morning walking around the Louvre, and if you ever go to Paris you must buy your tickets the night before and get to the Louvre as soon as it opens. By noon that place is packed and almost impossible to enjoy. Anyway, it was amazing and definitely worth the $12. We got to see the [View Full Entry]

Having our usual preference for early morning flights, Lao-puo Suzanne and I arose early on Saturday morning for our flight from Taipei to Hong Kong. Thai Airlines is usually pretty good, but they were mediocre at best on this trip. Devil a drop of wine for one thing, and my tongue hanging out a mile. The meal, not really a breakfast, was a greasy Chinese ham sausage and some cold cabbage. It didn’t really matter, as it’s only a two-hour flight. Such a difference from our first trip from Vancouver to Hong Kong, which was a little over thirteen hours! [View Full Entry]

Day 1

 Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris
Alright so we have made it to Paris and we have found our hotel room but I must say, it wasn't an easy task. I found out real fast why everyone says to pack light and exactly what they meant by pack light. You see, I thought I had packed pretty good (and for a girl I really did) but apparently that wasn't good enough for my long truck to the hotel. Switching metros with 1 HUGE bag and 2 small ones is no easy task. On top of that I had to lug them up and down stair cases, and [View Full Entry]

To start, all I have to say is business class lounge. I sat there as the youngest person in the room, by far, drinking cappacino with Baileys, eating bri and crackers, and listening to the iPod. I think I'm going to enjoy this. The flights are much easier when you are in business class due to the fact that they stuff you full of great food and then let you fall asleep in your fold down bed. But even with the great seating arrangement and all the nice food, I didn't sleep more than half an hour. Needless to say, tomorrow [View Full Entry]

Since we last wrote, we´re afraid too much has happened but we shall spare you all the gruelling details and just summarise some key funny/interesting moments of the last few weeks. Sadly the Uruguayan turtles needed no help since they had buggered off to warmer pastures, and so we made like them and left Uruguay pretty swiftly to meet Stephanie in Buenos Aires. 1. Endless bus journeys cheered up by a certain big-busted idiot and her autobiography, I quote: “Fake hair, fake-boobed me”. Answers on the back of a postcard, please. 2. Steph being snogged by a scary dandruff/sug [View Full Entry]

April 13, 96 (as I start to write this) It’s altogether too pleasant, in my beloved East Rift Valley, to remain angry and upset for too long. There is nothing like the patch of wildflowers at Ji An Station, or a bush of burgundy hibiscus blossoms at an unexpected train stop, or a proud-as-Lucifer ringnecked pheasant strutting about, or pagan dan pin for breakfast in Fong Lin, or 90 km/h on 11A as dawn breaks, to knock the spots off any bout of ill temper. Da bei Taiwan pi jo doesn’t do any harm either—and it’s not nearly as strong or [View Full Entry]

Chapter 40: Post Fubar

 Asia » Taiwan » Hualien
April 2, 96 (as I start to write this) Chapter 40 was a disaster! My apologies to you all--the blog site went into a sort of "Sorcerer's Apprentice" mode, and advised everyone repeatedly that a new entry had been published. However, there was no publishing. I'm just going to move on, and since there is more news about Lao-puo I will add a quick Chapter 41 later on today.. The travelblog website was down for most of the day, while the technical people took the broom handle out of my spokes. Moving, even from the fourth floor of a walkup, can [View Full Entry]
