Ngaio - Lorelei Johnson

My name is Lorelei; I am from Alberta, Canada, and am enjoying a break from school and the perks of working in the real world (aka money for traveling!). I'm fairly adventurous, kind of a science geek, and am generally a happy person. In my spare time, I enjoy curling, reading, yoga, volunteering, wine and of course, traveling!

Mysterious and Intruiging
One and a half weeks later, after roughly 3749 miles of travel, I'm now back in Medicine Hat. My big (interesting, adventurous, fantastic) trip to Central America has come to an end. At this point, I really don't know what to say about my trip. I guess my blogs say it all, I had a fantastic time. Central America is incredibly beautiful, diverse, mysterious, and just all around breathtaking. Now that I'm home, I'm looking back at the pictures, and I still can't even believe how beautiful it was, or some of the crazy adventures I took part in. And I [View Full Entry]

Costa Rica is Beautiful :)
Moving on from Nicaragua into Costa Rica has been like going from floating peacefully down a river to plunging head first into rapids. In fact, I've experienced this both physically and metaphorically in the last week...but I'll get into that in a bit! Just a quick note before I begin - I managed to get a few pics up in my previous blogs. Not many because the internet still is too slow, but at least a few pics! So enjoy :) First, I'll tell you about the rest of my time in Nicaragua. We traveled from Granada to Ometepe Island via [View Full Entry]

Hola! I´ve gotten all the way to Nicaragua at this point, and again, have had a great week :) Unfortunately I still can´t get my pictures up...I´ll be in San Jose Costa Rica in a few days though, I have high hopes for the internet connection there... We left Copan about a week ago - caught a bus to San Pedro, and made a last minute connection to Tela. Tela is a small Honduran beach town, and it was my first beach in nearly 3 weeks in Central America! I was quite excited to get back to the beach. Although the [View Full Entry]

Caves, ruins, volcanos, markets, hot springs, horses and history....I have had one hell of a week in Central America. I´m going to do my best to summarize it all, but there´s a lot so bear with me! By the way, apologies, but the internet connection in Honduras is not good enough to upload photos...so you'll have to wait for a later date to see those! I"ll try to get them up in Nicaragua, but more likely in Costa Rica...Anyway, hope the text is good enough for now! I finished my time in Belize with a bang - the tour to Actun [View Full Entry]

Another note from San Ignacio - yes, I'm still here, but am leaving soon. I have a few things to share since I last wrote, although not as many as I'd hoped, due to some unfortunate circumstances... Last week was the meat and potatoes of my HIV/AIDS outreach project. We did several talks to kids attending the July Police Cadet Camps in Belize. Our talk basically consisted of general HIV and AIDS info, some myth-busting, condom demonstrations (always a good time doing condom demonstrations for teenagers...I have a new respect for sex-ed teachers), and a few games to keep the kids [View Full Entry]

I have been in San Ignacio for about a week now - it's a lovely little town! For the most part my time here has been spent working very hard with Cornerstone Volunteers in an HIV/AIDS outreach program. Perhaps it would be best then to tell you a little bit about the Cornerstone Foundation and what they do here in Belize... Cornerstone is a grassroots humanitarian organization based out of San Ignacio here in Belize. They are very well developed, are doing quite well, and are known and respected throughout the community for all the good work they are doing. They've [View Full Entry]

I've made it to San Ignacio, a backpackers hotspot (stopover en route to or from Guatemala/Tikal, and site of some great caving tours) and volunteer hub in western Belize. So much has happened since I last wrote, and I promise this will be a recurring theme in my blogs :) I last wrote in Caye Caulker - beautiful place. I have completely fallen in love with the Belize Cayes, wow these islands are so incredible I can only explain it by showing pictures, and honestly the islands are even nicer than the pictures if you can believe it (you betta Belize [View Full Entry]

On the road again....this time to Central America! First stop: Belize. This solo trip started with the familiar slight anxiety that comes with traveling alone, as well as the excitement of heading into the unknown...I can't help but wonder what's waiting in the jungles of Central America for me to discover?? My trip into Belize City was considerably less stressful and much shorter than my trip to Asia last year (thankfully!). Also there's a minimal time difference (like 1 or 2 hours) so I'm not dealing with jetlag. So after 16 hours or so, I made it safely to Belize City! [View Full Entry]

Southern Thailand through Malaysia to Singapore The Journey Home My Whole Trip! Hello everyone - Time for the last installment of my 2007 South East Asia Travel experience. I am writing this one from back home in Edmonton. I'm both sad and happy to be home, which I'm sure you'll understand by the end of this blog... I last wrote as we finished our time in Bangkok. From there we traveled south to Surat Thani by overnight train. We took a ferry out to Koh Phangan, a beautiful island in the Gulf [View Full Entry]

Bangkok to...Bangkok, Actually :) Sawatdee from Thailand! I've been ever so busy, as always, and I'm having a great time in Asia (again, as always!). Since I last wrote, I've been through Laos, Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai), and Bangkok, and I've had by far the most exciting week and a half of my whole trip so far... I have to start by saying that Laos is one of the coolest places I've ever been to. It's not hard to see why most travellers in South East Asia pick it as their favorite country. The landscape is stunning, the pollution is [View Full Entry]
